Daily life in Ciudad Real

 ¡Hola a todos! Not every day here in Spain involves a grand adventure to somewhere like Córdoba, but that doesn't mean we're not still having fun! In addition to their classes on Spanish language, linguistics, literature and culture, the students have spent a lot of time getting to know each other, playing games, and finding all sorts of ways to be active and creative. Every day we spend the afternoon (or, if it's shaping up to be a very hot day in Ciudad Real, the morning) participating in activities like sports, theater, choir, dance, and art. And in their spare time, everyone has gotten into card games like Uno as well as games they probably haven't played since they were little, like "Heads Up, Seven Up" and "Duck, Duck, Goose". You can see a little more in the pictures below (with captions explaining what we were up to!)

I'll see you all again next week to tell you all about our experience learning two traditional Spanish dances: the jota manchega and sevillanas!

Getting to know the city

Hola a todos, we've had a busy past few days in Ciudad Real! Yesterday was the students' first full day of classes. They're all already working hard and learning a lot-- but that doesn't mean they're not still having fun! During our first break yesterday, some students passed the time playing card games, while others played a bit of fútbol with some kids at the school. After lunch, we all went outside for afternoon activities. The activity of the day: ¡deportes! Some students started a pick-up game of soccer, some tossed around a football (and tried to teach me how to throw it correctly), while others took the opportunity to relax and bask in the sun. Later that evening, we all met at the school gates for a walking tour of Ciudad Real. Our tour guide, Maru, showed us some incredible sights and we learned so much about the history of the city! Among other things, we saw some of the oldest buildings in the city, statues of Don Quijote and Miguel de Cerva

A warm welcome

    We're finally here! After a long and exciting day of travel, the students arrived in Ciudad Real by bus on Saturday afternoon and have spent the weekend resting, getting to know their host families, and enjoying their first taste of Spain.  The students made the most of our journey here, using the all the time spent in airports, planes, and busses to play games, get to know each other better, and even crochet. They started speaking Spanish the moment we touched down in Madrid and I'm already so impressed-- both by the language skills they already have and their willingness to ask questions and learn more! When we arrived in Ciudad Real a few hours later, the students were greeted by their new host families. The excitement was palpable; everyone was so happy to finally meet in person!   Tomorrow the students will see their new school for the first time and take a preliminary exam to test their current knowledge. Class is in session!

 ¡Hola a todos! Today the students attended their first day of classes in Ciudad Real! After a weekend with their host families, students made their way to school and arrived ready to learn and see their new friends again. Today students took their first language exams, which test where their Spanish skills are at the beginning of the program. At the end of the month they'll take a final exam to see how much they've improved! When they finished their exams students had a bit of time to relax before they were introduced to their new classes: Grammar, Linguistics, Literature, and Culture & Communication. They only got a taste of what's to come, but everyone was already excited and engaged--- I even saw some students doing their homework at lunch! We had lunch today at 1:15pm, which may seem late to Americans but is normal (even a bit early!) in Spain. Afterwards we spent the afternoon playing a few games and getting to know each other better.
